How to Disable (or Enable) Windows 10's Game Bar

Tired of launching Game Bar in Windows 10 by accident? Here's how to disable it completely ... and re-enable it later if you change your mind.

Quick LinksHow to Disable (Or Enable) the Game Bar on Windows 10 How to Disable the Xbox Button in Windows 10
Key Takeaways
Open Windows Settings, click "Gaming," then click the "Enable Game Bar" switch to the "Off" position to disable the Game Bar completely.
Untick the box next to "Allow Your Controller to Open the Game Bar" to disable the Xbox button on your controller.
Microsoft's Game Bar in Windows 10 is a handy way to call up an overlay of useful widgets using the Windows+G keyboard shortcut. But not everyone needs it, and if you'd like to disable it (or enable it again later), all it takes is a visit to Settings. Here's how.
How to Disable (Or Enable) the Game Bar on Windows 10
First, open Windows Settings. To do so, open the Start menu and click the small "gear" icon, or press Windows+i on your keyboard. In Settings, click "Gaming."
Under "Game Bar" settings, click the switch beneath "Enable Game Bar" until it is turned off. That will disable the Game Bar.
After that, close the Settings app. Try pressing Windows+G, and nothing will pop up. Even if you press the Xbox button on an Xbox controller, nothing will happen. The Game Bar has been fully disabled.
If you'd like to enable the Game Bar again, revisit the "Gaming" section in Windows Settings and flip the "Enable Game Bar" to the "On" position.
How to Disable the Xbox Button in Windows 10
By default, if you have an Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller connected to your Windows 10 PC, pressing the Xbox button (the large circle in the center of the controller with an "x" on it) will bring up the Xbox Game Bar.
If you'd like to disable this, visit Windows Settings > Gaming, then uncheck the box beside "Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller."
Alternately, if you disable the Game Bar completely using the "Enable Game Bar" switch, then the Xbox button on your controller will no longer call up the Game Bar. But that also disables calling up the Game Bar using other methods (such as the Windows+G shortcut).

How to Enable or Disable Nvidia In-Game Overlay
Easy to use and opens a lot of potential
Written by: Patrick Hearn, Twitter: @PatrickS_Hearn

Nvidia’s GeForce Experience brings with it a lot of benefits, including the Nvidia in-game overlay. This feature allows you to start broadcasting your game, perform instant replays, and record gameplay with just a tap of a button.
The Nvidia in-game overlay also lets you adjust Nvidia GPU settings on the fly to achieve optimal performance in your game, regardless of whether you’re trying to beat your high score or win a close game of Overwatch. This guide will show you how to open the Nvidia in-game overlay and troubleshoot potential issues.
Table of Contents
How to Enable The Nvidia In-Game Overlay
The overlay works with most games, but it requires you have GeForce Experience installed first. Many modern systems including Windows 10 and Windows 11 come with this application pre-installed, especially if they use an Nvidia graphics card. However, if you need to download the latest version, you can do so from the Nvidia website.
After you have installed GeForce Experience, you can open the overlay at any point by pressing Alt + Z. Doing this opens up several other features, too. You can take a screenshot with the overlay open by pressing Alt + F1, or you can enter Photo Mode by pressing Alt + F2.
Once in Photo Mode, you can change the way the game looks on-screen to snag screenshots with special effects. You can lay a 3×3 grid over the game, or you can apply different filters to what’s on-screen.
The filters include options like Colorblind Mode, which makes it easier for people that are colorblind to distinguish things in the game. You can also apply a Black and White filter, or a Painterly filter that makes the game look like it’s illustrated with brushstrokes. These filters only remain in place for the screenshot; as soon as you navigate away from the Photo Mode menu, the look of the game returns to normal.
If you do want to continue to play the game with the filters in place, that’s where the third option comes in: Game Filter. With the overlay pulled up, press Alt + F3 to bring up Game Filters. You can choose any of the filters you used for Photo Mode–along with a few new additional options, like the ability to remove the in-game HUD–and play the game differently.
This feature adds accessibility options, since colorblind players can use the Colorblind filter to better see the game. You can also access Performance metrics to measure the voltage, temperature of your GPU, and more. Keep in mind that using some features of the overlay, like the custom filters, can affect your frame rate.
How to Fix Nvidia Overlay
If you find that you can’t open the Nvidia overlay or that it doesn’t respond when you give commands, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and correct the problem.
Restart Your PC
The first and easiest step is to simply restart your PC. It takes only a couple of minutes and can resolve most common issues with your software.
Update Your GPU Driver
Out-of-date drivers are another one of the most common causes of problems with the Nvidia overlay. You can fix the Nvidia overlay by updating your drivers to the most recent version.
Open GeForce Experience.
Select Drivers at the top of the screen.
Select Download at the top of the screen.
After you download the file, you may need to restart your PC before it takes effect.
Check For Microsoft Windows Updates
If your drivers are up to date, then the problem with opening the Nvidia overlay might lie in Windows itself.
Open Windows Settings.
Select Update & Security.
Select Check for updates.
If there’s an update available, Windows will download and install it. After this is complete, restart your PC and test the Nvidia overlay once more.
Run GeForce Experience as Administrator
Sometimes you might need to run GeForce Experience as an administrator for it to have access to all the privileges it needs to run properly.
Open the Start menu and then right-click GeForce Experience and choose More > Run as administrator.
A window will pop up asking for confirmation. Select Yes.
Once GeForce Experience opens, launch a game and then press Alt + Z to open the overlay. This method will run it as an administrator just one time, but if it works, you’ll want to run it as an admin every time.
Select the GeForce Experience icon and choose Properties.
When the Properties menu opens, select the Compatibility tab.
Select Run this program as an administrator and then select Apply.
Doing this will ensure GeForce Experience runs in administrator mode every time.
The Nvidia in-game overlay is easy enough to activate and use, and opens up a lot of potential for users. You can change your gameplay experience with a filter, take customized screenshots, or even use accessibility features. It’s a useful program, and free to download.

Game overlays are easy to understand once you've seen an example, especially if you're familiar with the world of streaming. Let's say you're watching someone play a popular game. If you look at the category for it on Twitch, YouTube, and the like, you'll see that other people are also playing the same game. However, many content creators stream the game very simply: with gameplay, a microphone, and maybe a webcam on top. This way, they all look similar when you scroll through the category. However, if a stream in between scrolling with a video game overlay pops up - that is, a design above the actual game - it stands out from the other streamers and instantly makes the stream more attractive. In other words, you can see a game overlay as the first eye-catcher that attracts viewers. Once set up, your overlay does the rest, and you can focus on your content and community! Your designs will attract new viewers, and you can keep them entertained if you are a good player or simply likable. We stream with game overlays tooMany of our employees are enthusiastic gamers and streamers themselves. They knew: With game overlays, they could optimize their stream for Twitch, YouTube, Trovo, Facebook, and Co. So, even before they started at OWN3D, they came across our products in the store. They became customers before they decided to support the team with their knowledge! The best example is Sebastian, who bought an all-in-one package from our store for Valorant several months before he started working at OWN3D. Collectively, we create exactly what content creators need for streaming. With video game overlays set up quickly, you can get right back to what matters: Your community and having fun doing it!Still, trying to convince? Many of our staff members have purchased video game overlays from OWN3D before becoming part of the OWN3D team. So our team of gamers and streamers knows exactly what you need for your stream. We make sure that you are in good hands in our store and are guaranteed to find what you are looking for.Which broadcasting tools do the OWN3D game overlays work with? You can integrate the game overlays into all existing broadcasting tools, whether OBS Studio, Twitch Studio, XSplit, Streamlabs, StreamElements, or other programs! What does a game overlay all-in-one package include? Our video game overlays contain everything you need to start streaming via a broadcasting tool of your choice on Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms in just a few minutes. Starting with the core, the game overlay, where you can place your game, chat, camera and alerts. Plus, with the label designs inside, you also have the perfect place to highlight new followers, donations, and more. If you want to highlight your gameplay and only integrate the camera into the same scene, you can also find webcam overlays in different designs (also suitable for green screens). Furthermore, we also provide you with matching alerts, including sounds for all possible situations and platforms. With the animated intermission banners, you have the perfect start into the stream, a striking design for a break, or a good end scene to say goodbye. To be able to switch between the scenes expressively, an all-in-one game overlay package also includes a stream transition.Last but not least, you'll also find static designs for your Twitch panels, your profile banners, and a desktop background - all of which are coordinated with your game stream overlay! This way, your stream, channel, and desktop will have an impressive overall picture. By the way: Whether you are just starting to stream, are already a Twitch affiliate, or are aiming to become a partner, it doesn't matter for overlays, alerts, and the like. How can I set up game overlays? It's straightforward! You can create different scenes and populate each scene how you like it. Once you have downloaded and unpacked your OWN3D video game overlay, you can drag and drop the desired video file (overlay) and add it to a broadcasting tool of your choice - for example, the free tool OBS Studio. If you need help setting it up, we have a suitable OBS Studio tutorialhere!Where can I find free game overlays? You will also find free game overlays, but not directly in our store. For that, we have our free streaming toolOWN3D Pro! With OWN3D Pro for OBS Studio, we offer you five free game overlays and alerts. All you have to do is sign up, and you can use our all-in-one tool for free. The game overlays are fully installed and ready to use in seconds with just a single click. That means you can start streaming right away! You can always upgrade to a premium subscription if you like what you see and want to use more overlays, alerts, or music.Should I use a game overlay? With a game overlay, you are well-advised. The reason is quite simple: You stand out from the other streamers with a game stream overlay. If you want to build a community by streaming, this plays a significant role. This way, new viewers are likelier to click on your stream than if your stream looks like all the others. Can I use different game overlays for different games?Make sure that the graphics and sounds fit into the concept of your stream! For example, if you mainly play medieval games and sit in front of the camera in a suit of armor, unicorns and rainbows might not be the best fit. If you change your game often and want to set up a new overlay to match the content quickly, we recommendOWN3D Pro. With the streaming tool, you can choose between 900 overlays and alerts as an OWN3D Pro subscriber and five free game overlays and alerts installed with a single click! This tool can start your stream in a few minutes with brand-new overlays perfectly tailored to the game. If you want to switch back to the old overlay afterward, this overlay will also be saved as a scene collection. Quick LinksHow to Enable Discord's In-Game Overlay How to Customize Discord's Game Overlay How to Pin Windows to Discord's Game Overlay
Discord is the voice chat app for PC gaming, largely due to its clean interface and user-friendly in-game overlay. Enable and customize your own game overlay to minimize distractions and keep your focus on the game.
How to Enable Discord's In-Game Overlay
To enable the Discord game overlay, open the Settings menu by clicking on the cog icon next to your name and avatar near the bottom-left corner of the window.
Under App Settings, open the "Overlay" tab, and click the toggle next to "Enable In-Game Overlay." By default, you can lock the overlay by pressing Shift + ` (that's the key near the Tab key on your keyboard). You can change this setting by clicking on the keyboard icon and pressing a new key combination.
How to Customize Discord's Game Overlay
You can use the settings in this menu to change the size of avatars shown in the overlay or to choose when names and users are displayed.
Scroll down to the bottom of the Overlay menu to find the Notification Position. Click on one of the four grey corners of the screen to set where you'd like the overlay to appear. Next, click on the circle-backslash icon in the middle to disable overlay notifications.
You can also click the toggle at the bottom of the menu to show text notifications as well as the usual voice notifications.
To enable or disable the Discord game overlay for specific games, open the Settings menu and select the "Game Activity" tab. Click on the monitor icon on the right of a game to turn the overlay on or off.
You can adjust these settings while in-game. Bring up the in-game overlay menu by pressing Shift + ` (or your custom keyboard shortcut, if you've set one) and then clicking the cog icon.
How to Pin Windows to Discord's Game Overlay
Once your overlay is up and running, you can pin a text chat window over your game. Launch any game and then press Shift + ` (or whatever key combo you set earlier) to bring up the in-game overlay menu. Click the pin icon to make a window appear even when you lower the in-game overlay menu. You can adjust the opacity of this window by clicking the Opacity icon and adjusting the slider.
Discord really does provide all the settings that gamers in particular want from a VoIP app. Make sure your overlay is as clean and unintrusive as possible, while also displaying all the information you need to keep up with your team.
