L99 6.2L Engine Specs: Performance, Bore & Stroke, Cylinder Heads, Cam Specs & More

The L99 is a 6.2L, Gen. 4, small block engine used in the Chevy Camaro SS from 2010-2015. The information listed here is for a stock L99 engine.

Mechanically similar, General Motors’ LS and LS-based Vortec engines wound up on almost every branch of the GM family tree: Chevy, Pontiac, GMC, Cadillac, Buick—heck, even Saab, Hummer, and Isuzu got some LS love.

Since LS and Vortec engines are so common, they’ve become the go-to performance and swap engines of the modern era.

These motors are capable of making a lot of horsepower, and respond well to upgrades like turbos, superchargers, high-flow cylinder heads, intake systems, cams, and nitrous oxide.

The aftermarket is strong, crate engines are available, and used motors are often cheaply sourced through junkyards.

I have a 2012 Camaro SS L99 6.2L. I recently had one of the AFM lifters collapse and I am replacing all of the lifters with LS7 type. I am deleting the AFM from the setup but want to maintain VVT. The cam specs you have listed for the L99 & the LS3 have the exact same model # 12623066. If this is the case, I shouldn’t have to replace the cam. The LS3 does not have AFM or VVT, but the L99 has both. But if they are both using the exact same cam I should be fine, correct?

You are not fine Ronald. They also don’t list the valve lift specs quite right. They are different for the AFM cylinders and the non-AFM cylinders. The cams ARE different too, if you try using an AFM cam on a non-AFM motor and vise versa, you will get a hard misfire guaranteed. I’ve done it. Now if you get an LS3 cam and delete AFM and tune it, your probably ok.

I have a 2010 ss camaro I was wondering if some or the 2010 or the earlyer modle camaro did they not come win afm because mine 2010 seems like it don’t have it or note it is a automatic car ss thanks.

If its a 2010 auto, it came with the L99 with AFM. If someone has replaced the motor, no telling what the may have put in. A previous owner may have disable the system on the original L99.

Will W-pistons fit on J-engines? (W=LS3 w man. J=L99 w auto). Will rebuild a Camaro 2012 2SS with auto and delete AFM.

All 6.2 motors use same 4.065 dia. pistons. Compression ratio is the same for LS3 & L99 motors. So you should be fine.

hello have a 2011 camaro ss, want to make some more HP. have a chabce to purchase a supercharger kit off of a zli whole kit with cam, and intercooler would also do a cam up grade , put will i have to much compression ? any suggestion would help thanks. I also am rebuilding a 6.2 in a 2016 gmc sierra , that one ran out of oil, but thinking of getting rid of AFM and maybe a cam up grade will be my new to me daily drive and mild pulling of jet ski’s and pontoon very short distance,

本来去年过年的时候就打算写一些关于通用汽车LS系列V8发动机的介绍,但这几年手越来越懒,也没时间,电话不断,微信不停,所以静不下心来写点东西。又一年过去了,2016年LS系列发动机也即将退出通用产品线,我想想,还是应该写点什么纪念一下这款经典的小缸体V8。 关于LS发动机我会分为两部分介绍,这次先把LS系列发动机的基本信息写一下,可以作为工具,以便车友以后查阅。之后我会把几年来对于LS系列发动机改造、升级、大马力改造、以及一些常识技术知识和常用工具做一个比较系统的介绍,写这个东西除了是像让更多的人了解LS系列之外,更想通过这次复习并缕一下脑子里沉积的东西,更可以抛砖引玉,与更多的行业内朋友探讨,共同进步。 LS,是通用一个系列的小缸体V8发动机家族,用于前置后驱的卡车,SUV和轿车。这里所说的LS≠Chevrolet small block V8。我们这里只讨论现在常见的铝缸体LS家族发动机。 现在主流的LS家族主要分两代,GM small block GEN-III (1997-2004)和GM small block GENIV (2005-2016). 由于LS系列发动机体积小,重量轻,排量大,而且配件和技术资源在美国和澳大利亚非常丰富,搭配方式种类繁多,大到缸盖总成、中缸总成或发动机总成,小到气门油封、液压顶柱、气门摇臂,几乎所有的东西都可以按照自己的需求进行自由搭配。所以LS系列发动机的应用非常广泛,除了我们常见的那些美国肌肉和澳大利亚超级V8房车,专业直线赛事,NASCAR,off-road越野,越野拉力,monster truck等赛事外,buggy truck以及radical赛车方面应用都有非常高的出镜率。从350匹的专业赛车、550匹的GT赛车,到2000多匹的怪物,大多数都是以LS为基础升级而来的动力总成。 下面我们先简单介绍一下LS系列发动机的具体型号划分和特点。 GENIII (1997-2004) GEN III平台系列发动机通用在1997年正式用GEN III发动机替换了GEN-IILT系列。GEN III系列分两种材料的缸体,轿车发动机使用铸铝材料,SUV和皮卡使用铸铁材料缸体。但有些高性能型号的SUV,皮卡也是用铸铝缸体的发动机,比如Trail Blazer SS,SSR,Z71 truck等。LS铝缸体系列的强度已经非常接近GEN I和GEN II铸铁缸体,但重量却只有铸铁缸体的一半。 GEN III发动机总览: GEN III 排列形式 V8 排量 · 4,807 cc (293.3 cu in) · 5,328 cc (325.1 cu in) · 5,665 cc (345.7 cu in) · 5,967 cc (364.1 cu in) 缸径 · 96.01 mm (3.780 in) · 99 mm (3.9 in) · 101.6 mm (4.00 in) 冲程 · 83 mm (3.3 in) · 92 mm (3.6 in) 缸体材料 · 铝合金 · 铸铁 缸盖材料 铝合金 气门系统 OHV (顶置气门) 燃烧 喷射系统 序列多点电喷 燃料 汽油 润滑系统 湿式油底 冷却系统 水冷却 GEN III LS系列与以往I和II相比,做了以下改进: 缸盖螺丝:I和II的缸盖螺丝孔位为五角形,而GEN II LS系列缸盖螺丝改成了孔距等长的平行四边形。 下图为老的small block发动机的缸盖和缸垫 下图为GEN III LS1缸垫 活塞:LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7, LQ9和L33都是用平顶硅化表面处理活塞,而老的small block活塞顶形状各异。 下图LS1原厂活塞 Chevvy 350ci平顶活塞 Chevvy 350ci凸顶活塞 点火顺序:GENIII点火顺序改为1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3,与大多数现代V8的点火顺序相同,而老的small block点火顺序为1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2。 以上内容是关于GENIII LS系列发动机的一些基本信息,下面介绍以下单独的LS系列型号。 5.7升排量: LS1 GEN III的5.7升发动机与上一代LT系列有很多相似之处,比如排量,外形尺寸,连杆瓦尺寸。但第三代small block发动机是铝合金缸体,5,665 cc (5.665 L; 345.7 cu in)顶杆式发动机。目前,美国大多数改装品牌的高性能缸体、缸盖的大多数产品都是在LS1基础上开发的。 3.898 in(99.0 mm) 缸径x3.62 in (92 mm)冲程 二手发动机美国售价:800-4000美金 当通用在1997年发布Corvette C5时,LS1发动机的动力被锁定在345hp @5,600 rpm , 350 lbf·ft (470 N·m) @4,400 rpm。在2001年,通用改进了LS1的进气歧管和排气歧管,动力提升至350匹/495牛米。而装配F车身的4代Camaro和Trans Am上的LS1动力为325匹+,随着车速的提高,由于强制进气的设计,马力也会随之提升。在澳大利亚霍顿旗下的产品,在LS1的有生之年一直持续对这款发动机的修改和升级,量产发动机中,最高马力输出为382匹,在HSV GTS车型上装配的LS1更爆发出400hp的动力。 LS6 我们现在介绍的LS6与1970年雪佛兰铸铁缸体454CID big block同名。 LS6其实就是高功率版本的LS1,排量相同。2001年发布的前期LS6发动机,只用于装配Corvette Z06版本,385hp/522牛米。后在2002-2004年间,LS6进行了修改升级,产生405hp/540牛米的动力。在2004年,通用给第一代的CTS-V配备了400hp的LS6, 在2006年被6.0L排量的LS2代替。 LS6相对于LS1内部差别其实很多,虽然有相同的排量,相同的缸径和冲程,但经过优化的缸体,大幅度改善了发动机内部压力而减小发动机内部的动力损耗,充钠气门更有利于气门散热,10.5:1压缩比,更高气门扬程的凸轮轴,更高流量的进气歧管和流量计等,这些都是LS6与LS1的主要区别。 二手发动机美国售价:4000-6000美金 GEN IV (2005-2016) 2005年,通用公司的GEN IV第四代V8全面代替了GENIII发动机,GENIV家族的排量更大,最大排量的发动机做到了7.0升 (LS7 7.011L /427.8CI),和最大马力638匹(LS9)。其实GEN IV系列,是由GEN III改进而来,在GEN III的基础上增加了DOD (Displacement On Demand)和VVT (variable valve timing)可变气门正时。 GEN IV发动机总览 排列形式 V8 排量 · 4,807 cc (293.3 cu in) · 5,328 cc (325.1 cu in) · 5,967 cc (364.1 cu in) · 6,162 cc (376.0 cu in) · 7,008 cc (427.7 cu in) 缸径 · 96.01 mm (3.780 in) · 101.6 mm (4.00 in) · 103.25 mm (4.065 in) · 104.775 mm (4.1250 in) 冲程 · 83 mm (3.3 in) · 92 mm (3.6 in) · 101.6 mm (4.00 in) 缸体材料 · 铝合金 · 铸铁 缸盖材料 · 铝合金 气门系统 · OHV 燃烧 喷射系统 · 序列多点电喷 燃料 · 汽油 · E85酒精燃料 润滑系统 · Wet sump湿式油底 · Dry sump干式油底 冷却系统 · 水冷 6.0L排量系列: 5996cc (364.1ci),101.6 mm(4.000 in) 缸径x 92 mm(3.622 in)冲程。配备可变气门正时,flex-fuel system,除汽油燃料外,酒精燃料也可使用,部分机型使用主动燃油管理系统(Active Fuel Management,也就是DOD- Displacement On Demand)。 LS2: 400hp @6000rpm,542牛米@4400rpm。LS2和LS6的马力很接近,通过小幅度的排量提升,使全域的扭矩较LS6都有显著提升。LS2使用与LS6相同的243缸盖,但并没有使用LS6的高成本充钠气门,LS2配备的凸轮轴也没有LS6的气门扬程那么高。 下面把LS1LS6 LS2的发动机压缩比做一个简单的对比 LS1压缩比 10.2:1 LS6压缩比 10.5:1 LS2压缩比 10.9:1 雪佛兰的SUV车型TrailBlazer SS和SAAB 9-7X同样装配了LS2发动机,由于使用不同型面的进气歧管,峰值马力只有395hp,但低转速扭矩较Corvette和GTO有所提升。 LS2也是NASCAR赛车的原型发动机。 二手发动机美国售价:4500-7500美金 全新发动机美国售价:6500-13500美金 L76: L76也是源于LS2平台的低功率衍生品,与LS2不同的是L76装备AFM(Active Fuel Management)主动燃油管理系统,较普通的LS2发动机油耗更低,主要装配于SUV和C级家用车。 二手发动机美国售价:2500-5500美金 全新发动机美国售价:6000-12000美金 L76有三个动力版本: 348 bhp(260 kW) @5600 rpm,376 lb·ft (510 N·m) @4400 rpm,常见于Holden 361 bhp(269 kW),385 lb·ft (522 N·m),适用于Pontiac G8 GT 367 hp(274 kW) @5400 rpm, 375 lb·ft (508 N·m) @4400 rpm,Vertec6000系列,常见于Silverado和Sierra 在澳大利亚还有一款L76的衍生品叫L98,取消了DOD(Displacement On Demand)功能,修改了凸轮轴,在美国本土几乎见不到,马力提升至362匹,530牛米 LFA: 在此,不得不特意提到通用混动车型的发动机,LFA装配于通用旗下混合动力的皮卡和全尺寸SUV,与L76相差无几,10.8:1压缩比,332匹@5100rpm。并在2008年被Wards评为十佳量产发动机。 装配车型如下: · 2008–2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid · 2008–2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid · 2008-2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid · 2008-2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid · 2008-2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid 6.2升排量系列: 4.060英寸缸径(103.25mm),冲程与LS2相同3.622英寸(96mm)。与LS2都是同一开发平台,是通用替换LS2的更新系列。 6.2系列发动机里面,我们必须要先说一下常常出现在键盘车神和唇上车神口中的LS3,像L92 L99 LSA LS9都等后边说,LS3必须要放在最前面。因为LS3的光环太多了,关于LS3的传说和误解也太多了。 LS3: 第一次出现在人们视野中是在2007年,通用发布2008款Corvette,6.2升排量6162cc (376ci),430hp @5900rpm,575牛米扭矩@4600rpm,压缩比10.7:1。 LS3使用和L92相同的高流量汽缸盖,缸体部分与LS2相同,由于更大的缸径,所以缸套直径和厚度都有增加,更优化的高流量进气歧管,480cc喷油嘴,进气门55mm排气门40mm。而且市面上有很多CNC缸盖和铸造的高流量缸盖可以更换,可以对应更大的气门,更高的气门扬程,可自选的燃烧室容积和形状,LS3可以说是一款百变发动机,从原厂的430匹提升到惊人的2000匹以上都可能达到。当然,我们自己也有一点千匹以上发动机的经验。如果用原厂形式的锁片式气门,LS3最高转速被锁定到6600转。 mm)缸径 x3.62 in (92 mm)冲程,与LS3相同 这个发动机是通用的重头戏,这是通用公司在发布新款LT4发动机之前,量产机型当中马力最大的产品,配备Eaton 2.3L ,4叶式rootstype机械增压,进气歧管内两片水冷热交换器,目前装配了这款发动机的车型只有C6 Corvette ZR1。 二手发动机美国售价:14000-16000美金 4.00in(101.6mm)冲程 505 hp(377 kW) @6300 rpm,470 lb·ft (640 N·m) @4800 rpm,红线7100rpm LS7的缸体同样属于small block家族,继续使用4.4英寸最大缸筒直径,嵌入式缸套,原厂锻造曲轴和大瓦盖,锻造钛合金连杆,结晶硅化表面处理活塞。 缸盖部分,配有Del West制作的56mm钛合金进气门,41mm充钠合金排气门,由于LS7使用的高性能凸轮轴液压挺柱和特殊设计的进气歧管,使这台发动机可以轻松对应8000rpm的高转速。 通用生产的所有LS7发动机,全部在坐落在密西根州Wixon的General MotorsPerformance Build Center。每一台发动机都有他独一无二的出生证。在这里生产的LS7发动机,大多数被装配到Corvette ChevroletPerformance Products系列的产品 LS3 6.2 裸机售价:7000美金左右 与通用原厂量产配套CamaroSS的LS3性能指标全部相同,但可以通过ChevroletPerformance Products单独购买发动机总成,并可以配合ChevroletPerformance提供的替换式电脑和线束使用,一般用于跨平台移植和为老车改造使用。 LSX376/480 - 4.06英寸缸径系列  您以为这就结束了?并没有,我们还没聊4.06英寸缸径组别呢(这玩意儿的细分型号实在是太多了)。这一系列与4英寸和3.78英寸最大的不同在于,它是LS2发动机的后继产品系列,并主要装配在高性能轿车、跑车和高端SUV上面。第四代Small Block V8 6.2L发动机系列简介发动机代号(最早量产年份)缸体材质AFM技术(闭缸技术)Flex Fuel技术(支持E85乙醇汽油)VVT可变气门正时技术适用车型或与其它发动机的关系LS3(2008)铝无无无雪佛兰科尔维特(C6)等性能车LS9(2009)铝无无无LS3加持大机械增压版本LSA(2009)铝无无无LS9加持小机械增压版本L99(2010)铝有有有低功率节油版LS3L92(2007)铝无无有部分高端SUV车型L9H(2009)铝无有有L92技术升级的继任发动机L94(2010)铝有有有L94的可闭缸版本  第一款要说的就是大名鼎鼎的LS3发动机,这台发动机是最正统的LS2继任者。从开发定位角度,这台发动机要比LS7级别稍低,但也同属于高性能发动机定位,技术和制造用料水平不及LS7,属于高性价比之选。通用LS3 V8发动机基础参数隶属世代第四代通用Small Block(简称LS/Vortec系列)排量376ci.(6.2L)缸径4.065英寸(103.25mm)行程3.622英寸(92mm)最大功率432Ps-442Ps最大扭矩569N・m-580N・m  与LS7相比,LS3是一款流水线生产的大批量V8性能取向发动机,性价比很高。但便宜不代表它不够强大,LS3具备高角度凸轮的强化空心凸轮轴,LS7同款喷油嘴,以及10.7:1的高压缩比,并改善了LS2上面的进气气门摇臂和进气歧管设计,可靠性进一步提高。  这里需要额外多说一句的是,鲁式机械增压加持之后的LS9发动机,为了保证缸体强度能够承受更高缸压,工程师不仅降低了压缩比(降低到9:1),他们还加厚了缸体内壁尺寸,所以LS9的缸体并不是从LS3上直接拿过来用的状态。  以上,就是整个第四代Small Block V8系列发动机的盘点。它的细分型号众多,用途不一,但从大方针来说,基本上可以总结为:以发动机定位用途为导向,选择合适的缸体,再通过匹配不一样的缸盖、活塞、连杆、曲轴和新技术加持,实现各种不同细分版本。这不仅为原厂各种车型提供十分丰富的选择,对后市场改装来说也是一件好事,毕竟想要做到如此大的体量,零配件的高通用性是必要的,所以改装一台Small Block该干什么?换就完事儿了,尺寸统一,原厂件丰富,跟拼乐高一样有趣。实在不行,反正尺寸都是固定的,自己CNC“破个千匹洒洒水啦”!

L99 6.2L Engine Upgrade Guide: Expert Advice for L99 Mods to Maximize Performance

Intro to L99 Engines

The L99 was introduced in 2010 and powered the Gen. 5 Camaros that were equipped with automatic transmissions. This engine was advanced with VVT and AFM, and made 400 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque.

Why were there two different 6.2L engine options in the Camaro? At the time, AFM wasn’t operating smoothly enough with manual transmissions, so those cars got the LS3.

How to Get More Power From Your L99 Engine (Bolt-Ons)

For many people, upgrading the L99 starts with adding a cold air intake.

The factory exhaust system is very restrictive in an effort to reduce the 4-cylinder mode drone. A set of headers and aftermarket exhaust system flow a lot of air, but the drone becomes obnoxious. So how do we deal with that? Easy! We tune it out with an AFM disabler, or increase overall performance with a programmer.

The factory tune was conservative.

We recommend that you talk with your local chassis dyno tuner to choose a computer programmer. Here are some of the benefits:

Tune out AFM activation.

Correct the fuel and ignition timing tables.

Raising the factory redline will keep your vehicle in the meat of the powerband longer.

Raise shift points and firmness.

Shut off torque limiting.

Getting a tune makes it easier to dial in a bigger cam and injectors later. Before going to the tuner, we recommend installing a colder thermostat to open up the tuning window.

Below are other upgrades you can make to improve the performance of an L99 engine.

Upgrading the L99 Camshaft and Valvetrain

As we mentioned earlier, the engine came with AFM—which is known to fail.

If your engine is in good running condition now, you can install an AFM disabler. If a lifter is already failing, it’s best to go with an AFM delete kit.

And if you’re in this deep, why not put a cam in it?!

The first thing to decide is whether you want to maintain VVT.

Although not commonly used for all-out racing, VVT widens the powerband in a street-driven vehicle. If that sounds good, a VVT limiter kit and VVT cam is just what you need.

What are the downsides to VVT?

More serious cams often require 400 lbs. of valve spring open pressure. This makes it hard for the phaser to actuate. In addition, tuning VVT is a little more complex. If you don’t want to deal with that, a VVT delete kit is an option. It opens the door to a wide selection of camshafts.

Generally, 3-bolt cams are more common and only requires the addition of a 3-bolt 4-pole upper gear to convert it.

If you’re still driving daily, cams in the 215-220 degree intake-duration range can be tuned to idle like stock and still provide good mileage.

Cams in the 220-226 range are a little more serious, but are still easy to tune, and driveability is still good.

What are the limitations to going bigger?

Piston to valve clearance with a L99 is tight. There are specific cams in the 230-234 range with intake valve events specially designed to clear the piston without flycutting.

What if you already have a power adder?

Generally, supercharger cams and nitrous cams will have slightly more lobe separation and longer exhaust duration. Turbo cams reduce overlap with less exhaust duration split in relation to the intake.

The stock rockers are good up to 175 lbs. of seat pressure and 450 lbs. open. You will want to install a trunnion kit for added reliability. Want to save some shop labor? You can buy rockers with the trunnion kits already installed. This also saves you the cost of the installation tool.

Tech Tip: When you’re pulling the cam, switch out the spring-loaded timing chain tensioner for the more-reliable wedge-style (early) LS2 damper.

Here are a few parts commonly used for an L99 cam swap: LS2 timing chain, LS7 spec lifters, LS2 timing chain damper, and thick-wall chromoly pushrods.

L99 Power Adders

L99 engines are a popular choice for people that want to stay naturally aspirated, but if you do decide to boost, here are a couple of things to address:

A 4-corner steam kit reduces hot spots that can cause the rings to butt and snap the piston’s ring lands.

The 42 lb. fuel injectors will support around 525 whp which is where most power-adders are just getting started. We’ve addressed those in the next section on fuel system upgrades.

Okay, here’s the fun stuff:

A nitrous kit (at low settings) is great for street driving with stock internals. Up to a 200-shot is common. Keep in mind the tight piston ring gap is the limiting factor beyond that. If you’re wanting to get serious, a single-plane intake is less prone to break from a nitrous backfire. A plate system has better distribution than the original intake, but an eight-nozzle fogger system is even better. Running higher octane fuel is advised.

Turbo kits are everywhere. The least-expensive kits start with the factory exhaust manifolds feeding twins in the trans tunnel area. From there you will find tubular manifold kits with the turbo’s placed in the front upper corners of the engine bay. Horsepower increases start at 600 whp and goes up from there. Common street kits are capable of 1000+ whp with the right fueling and well-built engine.

A Roots-style supercharger is dependable and makes great torque in the low- and mid-rpm range. It’s so good that GM used one on their own LSA-powered ZL1. Horsepower ranges from 520-700 whp with higher levels of boost.

A centrifugal-style supercharger is lightweight and makes more power at high rpm. This is partially due to a larger intercooler mounted in front of the radiator. They don’t have quite the curb appeal of a Roots, but make great power.

Upgrading the L99 Fuel System and Tuning

The L99 came with 42-lb. injectors that can support roughly 525 whp. The most common upgrade is the LSA/LS9 injector. It bolts in and flows close to 30 percent more fuel. Fuel injector characterization info is widely available, but you’ll still want to talk to your tuner about it before the swap.

The fuel pump becomes an issue around 520 whp. The first option is to maintain or increase pump pressure with electronic voltage controllers and hotwire kits. From there, the ZL1 pump will drop into the factory tank and supports roughly 650 whp. When running boost, you can use a water-methanol system to supply extra fuel and lower charge air temps.

Upgrading the L99 Intake Manifold and Throttle Body

GM really did its homework with the factory intake and throttle body. Below 6000 rpm, it’s unbeatable with the exception of the Edelbrock Cross-Ram. There are some applications where other intakes make sense.

A standard runner length FAST manifold makes a few more horsepower, but some of that comes from the addition of a larger throttle body. The mid-length runner version would be a good option for serious racecars operating at 6000+ rpm at all times. It’s worth about 15-20 hp at 7000 rpm, but loses as much torque below 5500 rpm. This limits its use to serious road race cars, or pure drag cars with 5500+ stall converters.

How about a single plane intake? There are two main reasons to do this. One is a carb swap, but that would be a rarity with the L99. What would be more common is the guy that really loves his nitrous. The square bore plate style systems have better distribution to the individual cylinders than the L99 intake. This and the added strength would make it a good fit for this application. It will make another 20 hp at 7000 rpm, but the crossover doesn’t occur until 6500 rpm and it will consistently be down 30 ft.-lbs. of torque from idle to 5500 rpm.

Not afraid of hood scoops and 7000+ rpm? The taller Tunnel Rams will lose up to 30 ft.-lbs. torque below 5000 rpm. Horsepower matches at 6000 rpm and the Tunnel Ram will add another 25 hp by 7000 rpm.

Whichever direction you go, be sure to ask your tuner about going with a speed density tune. Doing so will remove the MAF restriction and give you more power.

Upgrading L99 Cylinder Heads

The L99 cylinder heads are similar to the LS3 heads except they used a heavier solid stem intake valve.

The stock heads can be CNC-ported for more airflow. Flow numbers can be as high as 373 cfm at .700 lift. Lightweight hollow-stem LS3 valves will drop right in. Between the light valves and better springs, the engines will pull cleanly to 7000 rpm. If you’re looking to boost to 800+ hp; a heavy-duty aftermarket stainless intake valve is a bit tougher and won’t tulip as quickly from the heat. Milling the heads .030 will bump compression to 10.8:1 and will increase power everywhere. Piston-to-valve clearance will be tight with cams beyond 230 at .050 in. of intake duration.

A better option is aftermarket heads. They reduce downtime, they’re all-new, and you can usually offset the added cost by selling your original heads. Valve angles are typically laid over to 13.5 degrees for increased piston-to-valve clearance. They flow better and the cross-sections are great for naturally aspirated or boosted engines. When comparing heads, look at the .400 in. lift numbers as a general indicator of how the heads will perform. With a medium-sized cam, 500+ whp (naturally aspirated) is a goal that is easily met.

Upgrading the L99 Rotating Assembly

On the L99 engine, pistons are the weak link and you probably already know someone who has popped one.

A set of forged pistons is a good idea and you can increase compression while you’re at it.

They have stronger wristpins, thicker ring lands, and the added valve reliefs allow you to run big cams. If you’re going over 1000 hp, or use a 300+ shot of nitrous, a set of .200 wall tool-steel pins is a good idea.

The L99’s Gen. 4 rods are stronger than the Gen. 3 rods and have full floating pins. They can handle about 800 hp and 7000 rpm in boosted applications (at least for a while). They are likely to bend before they break when subjected to real track conditions.

If you’re getting forged pistons, upgrade to forged connecting rods at the same time. Big 7/16-inch rod bolts will go a long way to keep things together over 7000 rpm.

The L99 crank was cast but strong. The main reason for a stroker crank is added cubic inches. With heads and manifolds available that breathe well above 7000 rpm, more cubes can bring the power peak back into hydraulic roller territory for more power under the curve.

Performance rotating assemblies are available in many combinations.

A couple notes of caution when stroking the engine:

The 6.2L aluminum blocks had slightly longer cylinder sleeves than the iron blocks (5.500 in. vs. 5.430 in. on average). When running a stroker crank, much of the piston skirt drops out of the bottom of the cylinder at BDC. The best piston manufacturers have compensated for this by eliminating skirt taper until a point well above where it meets the bottom of the cylinder sleeve at BDC. Any skirt taper at this intersection acts as a razor blade and will quickly wear out the piston. This is especially true of the 427 c.i.d. combination, and the piston design is critical to long life.

The blueprint deck height of the block is 9.240 in. It’s best to measure deck height before ordering your rotating assembly. Thicker head gaskets or using an aftermarket 6.098-6.100 in. rod will ensure enough piston-to-head clearance.

Upgrading the L99 Engine Block

The L99 engine block has a 4.065-in. bore diameter. It wasn’t torque-plate honed from the factory and the cylinders aren’t particularly strong. Usually the bores are torque-plate honed to 4.070 in. From there, custom pistons and rings are available in .005 in. increments.

You can make 850 whp with a couple of simple upgrades like head studs and LS9 head gaskets. Race gas, E-85, or water-methanol injection is required.

The factory main caps aren’t doweled. It’s better to reduce ignition timing and compensate with added boost to reduce the cylinder pressure spikes that can lift heads and cause the main caps to dance.

Main studs should be added anytime you’re this deep in the engine.

I’m having a problem trying to find an answer with no luck. I’m installing a cam with stock. 500 lift but longer duration of mid 220’s. Stock duration is 195/201. This is gen 4 Camaro SS L99. Will I need to use a phaser limiter with this cam????? No one has answers!!

Can a 95 or 92mm throttle body be added to a stock L99 engine? Current upgrades: 3 1/2″ catbacks, CAI cold air, Dynomax tuned.

Yes of course but you need an adapter for that

You can go as high as 102mm afaik

ICT Billet makes a nice line of adapters. Generally the stock 90mm isn’t a restriction and this can be measured as KPA at WOT high rpm with HP Tuners. If you did want to swap on a 102mm tb (pretty common), the part number would be ICB-551517

How reliable is an L99 stock engine equipped with a stage 1 Edelbrock supercharger (as in a 2010 SS Camaro)?

I put OBX 1-7/8″ headers,borla atak exhaust, holley low profile sniper intake, deleted everything that needed to be, got a tune from east coast superchargers, and they dyno it at 404whp at the wheels ,that puts the hp at the crank around 550+,thats all I did

I just bought a 2011 SS Camaro yesterday. Your article on L99’s is very well written and easy to understand. Without doing engine mods at this time what upgrades can I do in incremental steps to just have fun with it at an 1/8 mile track but still drive on the street. The end goal of being just a strip car. The car sounds like it needs to breath better sounds very restrictive. Any suggestions or reference would be awesome.

I’m stationed at Campbell, Active Duty, bought a 2011 Camaro SS,L99 6.2L, about 8 months ago. It’s stock but exhaust, X-pipe with a muff delete. I’m trying to get to 500rwhp(if possible) without throwing a pro/super/turbo charger on it. Just wanted to get a list of modifications to do from start to finish and ball-park figure on parts. Don’t really know where to go locally for this info so I’m starting here. Born and raised Houston, League City, so help a fellow Houstonian out!

i have a 2011 Camaro 2ss with the 6.2 L99 engine. i have a cold air intake and a Fast LSXR intake manifold with a tune. I’m looking to upgrade WHP, I’m keeping the stock crank and pistons. I’m looking to gain at least 500 to 550 HP to the wheels. i was told that i need a BTR kit and converter. i want to by a kit with everything in it. What do you recommend including the specs? Thank You for you’re input.

I have a l99 and I bent a pushrod due to a failed afm lifter. Can I replace all the afm lifters with regular lifters and lifter guides? And do nothing else? My computer has already been programmed to delete the AFM.

I have a 2011 Camaro SS L99 i had my motor completely rebuilt i added a cam headers lsxfast intake 102mm throttle body i want to do a speed density tune is there anything else i need to do before finding a good tuner any recommendation trying to get at least 600 hp for street n track uses…

Depending on if you maxxed out the size of the cam without cutting try fully porting your heads or just buying prc heads you’ll be close probably around 520-550 just add a 100 shot of nitrous just for track use and the car will be alot more drivable on the street.

I installed an Ls7 in place of my L99 in my 2010 camaro in 2013. know running into an issue with califorina emission testing. they are know checking calibrations in the ecm. the ecm was tunned to deleate afm and vvt. can i add the vvt to the Ls7? or dose anyone have a c.a.r.b. legal tuner that deletes vvt? like for an Ls3 conversion.
