Create installation media for Windows
Windows 10 Windows 8.1 Windows 7 More...Less
You can use installation media (a USB flash drive or DVD) to install a new copy of Windows, perform a clean installation, or reinstall Windows.
To create installation media, go to the software download website, where you'll find step-by-step instructions. On that website, you can select a version of Windows and create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD. To go directly to one of the versions, select one of these links:
Windows 7
Windows 8.1
Windows 10 (Then select Download now.)
Windows 11 (Then select Download now.)
Important: Back up your files before you install or reinstall Windows on your PC. Learn how.
To create the installation media, here's what you'll need:
A PC with a reliable internet connection. The download time will vary, depending on your internet connection.
A USB flash drive, external hard drive, or DVD. A blank USB flash drive or external hard drive with at least 8 GB of space, or a blank DVD (and DVD burner). We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD because any content on it will be deleted. When burning a DVD from an ISO file, if you're told the disc image file is too large, you'll need to use dual layer (DL) DVD media.
A product key. Your 25-character product key (not required for digital licenses). For help finding it, go to Find your Windows product key.
After you've created the installation media, you can reset or reinstall Windows. To learn more, go to Recovery options in Windows.

Reinstall Windows
Windows 11 Windows 10 More...Less
Windows 11Windows 10
If you're having problems with Windows 11 on your PC or you want a fresh copy of Windows 11 without the clutter of old files or apps, you can reinstall Windows 11 to try and fix your issues and return your PC to a cleaner state.
Check your disk space
If your PC isn't performing as expected or if you're having issues with Windows 11, it may be because of low disk space. Before you reinstall Windows 11, try freeing up disk space to see if that helps. For more info, see Free up drive space in Windows.
Before you begin
Make sure you back up your data
If you have personal data and files that you want to save, back them up to an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, SD card, or cloud location (such as OneDrive) before you begin to reinstall Windows 11.
Make sure Windows 11 is activated
Windows 11 must be activated after it’s reinstalled. Usually this happens automatically after you go online. For more info, see "Activating after reinstalling Windows" in Activate Windows.
You’ll need to link your Microsoft account to your digital license before you reinstall Windows
In Windows 11, you must link your Microsoft account to the Windows 11 digital license on your PC before you can reactivate Windows. For more info, see "Associate your Windows license with your Microsoft account" in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
You'll need to reactivate Windows 11 if you've made a significant hardware change to your PC
If you reinstall Windows 11 after you make a significant hardware change to your PC (such as replacing the motherboard), it may no longer be activated. You can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. For more info, see Using the Activation troubleshooter.
You’ll need to reinstall the edition of Windows that matches your license
When you reinstall Windows 11, you'll need to select the edition of Windows that matches your digital license. For example, if you’re running Windows 11 Home, you’ll need to install Windows 11 Home again.
To see which edition of Windows you're running, go to Start > Settings > System > About . Your edition is listed under Windows specifications.
Types of reinstalls for Windows 11
The following chart provides info about the different options that you can choose for each type of reinstall including what happens to your apps, files, personal data, and how much disk space is required for the reinstall. Use this chart to help you decide which option to use to reinstall Windows 11.
We recommend that you first try to "Reset Windows 11," then, if needed, "Reinstall Windows 11 using installation media," and then, if needed, try a "Clean install of Windows 11 using installation media."
Notes:
Reinstalling Windows 11 using installation media while choosing to ‘Keep nothing’ (a clean install) will automatically enable reserved storage if the partition you reinstall Windows to is 20GB or larger. Reserved storage sets aside disk space to be used by updates, apps, temporary files, and system caches, thus improving the day-to-day function of your PC by ensuring that critical OS functions always have access to disk space.
For devices with reserved storage, a reset or reinstall will first use the reserved storage space before using other disk space. For more info, see How reserved storage works in Windows.

Reset Windows 11
This option will take your device back to a state similar to when you turned it on for the first time, removing programs you have installed and removing personal files, depending on which option you select. Windows will handle everything automatically, and you won’t need to use an external storage device. Resetting your device is less impactful than the clean install option, though it will require sufficient disk space.
You can reset your PC from Settings or the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which can be accessed through the sign-in screen. For the steps to reset Windows 11, see Reset or reinstall Windows.
If your PC doesn’t have sufficient space available to reset Windows 11, you’ll receive a notification. In this scenario, either free up additional space or use the steps in the next section to reinstall Windows 11.
Reinstall Windows 11 using installation media
This option will use a tool to create installation media which you can use to completely wipe the disk and install a fresh copy of Windows 11. This option requires you to use an external storage device such as a USB drive, and will give you an option to choose what to keep during installation.
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
An internet connection
An external storage device such as a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive with at least 8GB of available space.
Create the installation media
First, create the installation media that you'll use to reinstall Windows 11.
Make sure you've backed up any files on your device that you wish to save onto an external storage device such as a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive, or upload your files to OneDrive.
Note: If you use an external storage device to back up files, make sure it’s a different one than the one you’ll be using to download Windows 10 installation media.
Download the Windows 11 installation media to a separate external storage device that has at least 8GB of available space. Everything on this drive will be deleted to complete the download, so make sure it’s empty before you proceed. Here's how:
On a working PC, go to the Microsoft software download website and select Download tool now.
When the download is complete, open the tool from your desktop, and then select Yes when asked if you’d like to allow the app to make changes to your device.
When the Windows 11 Setup guide appears, accept the license terms and agreements.
Select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC, and then select Next.
Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit), and then select Next.
Select USB flash drive, and then select Next.
Follow the steps to create installation media, and then select Finish.
Use the installation media to reinstall Windows 11
Connect the installation media you created to your PC and reinstall Windows 11.
Open File Explorer and select the drive with the installation media.
From the root directory of the drive, double-click setup.exe, and then select Yes when asked if you’d like to allow the app to make changes to your device.
Select Change to determine what to keep: Select one of the following options, and then select Next:
Keep personal files and apps – This will preserve your personal data, apps, and settings.
Keep personal files only – This will preserve your personal data and settings, but all your apps will be removed.
Keep nothing – This will remove all personal data, settings, and apps.
Warning: You cannot undo a reinstallation of Windows 10. Be sure to back up your files first if you choose the Keep nothing option.
To finish, select Install to start reinstalling Windows 11 on your PC.
Your PC will restart several times during the reinstallation.
Clean install of Windows 11 using installation media
Warning:
A clean installation is an advanced option to help you start fresh on your device. We recommend following the below steps only if you're confident in making these changes. For more help, contact support.
This will remove all your personal files, apps and drivers you installed, apps and customizations from your PC manufacturer, and changes you made in Settings.
This option will use a tool to create installation media which you can use to completely wipe the disk and install a fresh copy of Windows 11. This option requires you to use an external storage device such as a USB drive, and may take a few extra steps, though it will delete everything for the cleanest installation. This type of clean install deletes and recreates system partitions. It will delete all personal files on your device and the partition on your hard drive currently being used for your recovery drive.
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
An internet connection
An external storage device such as a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive with at least 8GB of available space
Create the installation media
First, create the installation media that you'll use to perform a clean install of Windows 11.
Make sure you've backed up any files on your device that you wish to save onto an external storage device such as a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive, or upload your files to OneDrive.
Note: If you use an external storage device to back up files, make sure it’s a different one than the one you’ll be using to download Windows 11 installation media.
Download the Windows 11 installation media to a separate 8GB-sized external storage device. Everything on this drive will be deleted to complete the download, so make sure it’s empty before you proceed. Here's how:
On a working PC, go to the Microsoft software download website and select Download tool now.
When the download is complete, open the tool from your desktop, and then select Yes when asked if you’d like to allow the tool to make changes to your device.
When the Windows 11 Setup guide appears, accept the license terms and agreements.
Select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) from another PC, and then select Next.
Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
Follow the steps to create installation media, and then select Finish.
Use the installation media to perform a clean install
Connect the installation media you created to your PC and perform a clean install of Windows 11.
Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery .Open Recovery settings
Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
Select Use a device, and then choose the device corresponding to the external storage device you’re using.
Note: If the Use a device option isn’t available, visit your device manufacturer’s website for details on how to boot from a USB flash drive.
When the first Windows screen appears, choose the options that best suit your needs, and then select Next.
Select Install now, and then check the I accept box. Select Next, and then select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced). Your device will now display a list of drives and partitions. If multiple disks are displayed, you’ll only need to delete all partitions from the disk where you want to install Windows.
Highlight each drive/partition in the list and select Delete. When the Windows Setup notification appears, select OK.
Complete step 5 for every drive in the list except the one that says Unallocated Space. When you’re finished, only Drive 0 Unallocated Space should remain.
Select Next.
The Windows setup screen will now display Installing Windows. When the installation is complete, your device will restart. When this happens, it may try to restart from the external storage device. If the initial Windows setup screen requests you choose you language/keyboard layout, remove the external storage drive from your device and select OK. This will restart your device.
Once the installation is complete and your device has restarted, select the preferences and settings you’d like for your device.
If you're having problems with Windows 10 on your PC or you want a fresh copy of Windows 10 without the clutter of old files or apps, you can reinstall Windows 10 to try and fix your issues and return your PC to a cleaner state.
Check your disk space
If your PC isn't performing as expected or if you're having issues with Windows 10, it may be because of low disk space. Before you reinstall Windows 10, try freeing up disk space to see if that helps. For more info, see Free up drive space in Windows.
Before you begin
Make sure you back up your data
If you have personal data and files that you want to save, back them up to an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, SD card, or cloud location (such as OneDrive) before you begin to reinstall Windows 10.
Make sure Windows 10 is activated
Windows 10 must be activated after it’s reinstalled. Usually this happens automatically after you go online. For more info, see "Activating after reinstalling Windows 10" in Activate Windows.
Note: If Windows 10 was activated on your device after upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you have a digital license for Windows 10 that can automatically activate Windows 10 after you reinstall it. For more info, see "Activating after reinstalling Windows 10" in Activate Windows.
You’ll need to link your Microsoft account to your digital license before you reinstall Windows
In Windows 10 (version 1607 or later), you must link your Microsoft account to the Windows 10 digital license on your PC before you can reactivate Windows. For more info, see "Associate your Windows 10 license with your Microsoft account" in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
You'll need to reactivate Windows 10 if you've made a significant hardware change to your PC
If you reinstall Windows 10 after you make a significant hardware change to your PC (such as replacing the motherboard), it may no longer be activated. If you were running Windows 10 (Version 1607) before the hardware change, you can use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate Windows. For more info, see Using the Activation troubleshooter.
Note: If you weren't running Windows 10 before making the hardware change, or if the troubleshooter can't re-activate Windows, contact support.
You’ll need to reinstall the edition of Windows that matches your license
When you reinstall Windows 10, you'll need to select the edition of Windows that matches your digital license. For example, if you’re running Windows 10 Home, you’ll need to install Windows 10 Home again.
Types of reinstalls for Windows 10
The following chart provides info about the different options that you can choose for each type of reinstall including what happens to your apps, files, personal data, and how much disk space is required for the reinstall. Use this chart to help you decide which option to use to reinstall Windows 10.
We recommend that you first try to "Reset Windows 10," then, if needed, "Reinstall Windows 10 using installation media," and then, if needed, try a "Clean install of Windows 10 using installation media."
Notes:
Starting with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903), reinstalling Windows 10 using installation media while choosing to ‘Keep nothing’ (a clean install) will automatically enable reserved storage if the partition you reinstall Windows to is 20GB or larger. Reserved storage sets aside disk space to be used by updates, apps, temporary files, and system caches, thus improving the day-to-day function of your PC by ensuring that critical OS functions always have access to disk space.

Installation (or setup) of a computer program (including device drivers and plugins), is the act of making the program ready for execution. Installation refers to the particular configuration of software or hardware with a view to making it usable with the computer. A soft or digital copy of the piece of software (program) is needed to install it. There are different processes of installing a piece of software (program). Because the process varies for each program and each computer, programs (including operating systems) often come with an installer, a specialised program responsible for doing whatever is needed (see below) for the installation. Installation may be part of a larger software deployment process.[1]
Installation typically involves code (program) being copied/generated from the installation files to new files on the local computer for easier access by the operating system, creating necessary directories, registering environment variables, providing a separate program for un-installation etc. Because code is generally copied/generated in multiple locations, uninstallation usually involves more than just erasing the program folder. For example, registry files and other system code may need to be modified or deleted for a complete uninstallation.
Overview[edit]
Some computer programs can be executed by simply copying them into a folder stored on a computer and executing them. Other programs are supplied in a form unsuitable for immediate execution and therefore need an installation procedure. Once installed, the program can be executed again and again, without the need to reinstall before each execution.
Common operations performed during software installations include:
Making sure that necessary system requirements are met
Checking for existing versions of the software
Creating or updating program files and folders
Adding configuration data such as configuration files, Windows registry entries or environment variables
Making the software accessible to the user, for instance by creating links, shortcuts or bookmarks
Configuring components that run automatically, such as daemons or Windows services
Performing product activation
Updating the software versions
These operations may require some charges or be free of charge. In case of payment, installation costs means the costs connected and relevant to or incurred as a result of installing the drivers or the equipment in the customers' premises.
Some installers may attempt to trick users into installing junkware such as various forms of adware, toolbars, trialware or software of partnering companies.[2] To prevent this, extra caution on what exactly is being asked to be installed is needed. The installation of additional software then can simply be skipped or unchecked (this may require the user to use the "custom", "detailed" or "expert" version of the installation procedure).[2]Such malicious conduct is not necessarily a decision by the software developers or their company but can also be an issue of external installers such as the Download.com installer by CNET.[3]
Necessity[edit]
As mentioned earlier, some computer programs need no installation. This was once usual for many programs which run on DOS, the classic Mac OS, Atari TOS and AmigaOS. As computing environments grew more complex and fixed hard drives replaced floppy disks, the need for tangible installation presented itself. For example Commodore released the Installer for Amiga.
A class of modern applications that do not need installation are known as portable applications, as they may be roamed around onto different computers and run. Similarly, there are live operating systems, which do not need installation and can be run directly from a bootable CD, DVD, USB flash drive or loaded over the network as with thin clients. Examples are AmigaOS 4.0, various Linux distributions, MorphOS or Mac OS versions 1.0 through 9.0. (See live CD and live USB.) Finally, web applications, which run inside a web browser, do not need installation.
Types[edit]
Custom installation[edit]
A custom installation allows the installer to choose to select components or parts that are required to be installed.
This is sometimes preferred as opposed to installing the full suite of software components. Some situations that require
the need for a custom install might be where only the basic components are required which are smaller in size instead of the
full components which may take up too much hard drive space.
Attended installation[edit]
On Windows systems, this is the most common form of installation. An installation process usually needs a user who attend it to make choices, such as accepting or declining an end-user license agreement (EULA), specifying preferences such as the installation location, supplying passwords or assisting in product activation. In graphical environments, installers that offer a wizard-based interface are common. Attended installers may ask users to help mitigate the errors. For instance, if the disk in which the computer program is being installed was full, the installer may ask the user to specify another target path or clear enough space in the disk. A common misconception is unarchivation, which is not considered an installation action because it does not include user choices, such as accepting or declining EULA.
Silent installation[edit]
A "silent installation" is an installation that does not display messages or windows during its progress. "Silent installation" is not the same as "unattended installation" (see below): All silent installations are unattended but not all unattended installations are silent. The reason behind a silent installation may be convenience or subterfuge. Malware and viruses can be installed silently when a person clicks on a link while working at a business they think is real but is a hacker's program download.[4][5] For normal users silent installation is not of much use, but in bigger organizations where thousands of users work, deploying the applications becomes a typical task and for that reason silent installation is performed so that the application is installed in the background without affecting the work of the user. Silent parameters can vary from software to software; if a software/application has silent parameters, it can be checked by "
Silently installing a software program can be used to deploy a program on networks in educational institutions, including primary and secondary education and universities, in addition to business, government, and corporate networks. The person managing the silent installation can choose to add a desktop shortcut, for example, to silently install Google Drive with a desktop shortcut[6]:GoogleDrive.exe --silent --desktop_shortcut=true
Unattended installation[edit]
Installation that is performed without user interaction during its progress or with no user present at all. One of the reasons to use this approach is to automate the installation of a large number of systems. An unattended installation either does not require the user to supply anything or has received all necessary input prior to the start of installation. Such input may be in the form of command line switches or an answer file, a file that contains all the necessary parameters. Windows XP and most Linux distributions are examples of operating systems that can be installed with an answer file. In unattended installation, it is assumed that there is no user to help mitigate errors. For instance, if the installation medium was faulty, the installer should fail the installation, as there is no user to fix the fault or replace the medium. Unattended installers may record errors in a computer log for later review.
Headless installation[edit]
Installation performed without using a computer monitor connected. In attended forms of headless installation, another machine connects to the target machine (for instance, via a local area network) and takes over the display output. Since a headless installation does not need a user at the location of the target computer, unattended headless installers may be used to install a program on multiple machines at the same time.
Scheduled or automated installation[edit]
An installation process that runs on a preset time or when a predefined condition transpires, as opposed to an installation process that starts explicitly on a user's command. For instance, a system administrator willing to install a later version of a computer program that is being used can schedule that installation to occur when that program is not running. An operating system may automatically install a device driver for a device that the user connects. (See plug and play.) Malware may also be installed automatically. For example, the infamous Conficker was installed when the user plugged an infected device to their computer.
Clean installation[edit]
A clean installation is one that is done in the absence of any interfering elements such as old versions of the computer program being installed or leftovers from a previous installation. In particular, the clean installation of an operating system is an installation in which the target disk partition is erased before installation. Since the interfering elements are absent, a clean installation may succeed where an unclean installation may fail or may take significantly longer.
Network installation[edit]
Not to be confused with network booting.
Network installation, shortened netinstall, is an installation of a program from a shared network resource that may be done by installing a minimal system before proceeding to download further packages over the network. This may simply be a copy of the original media but software publishers which offer site licenses for institutional customers may provide a version intended for installation over a network.
Installer[edit]
Look up installer in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
An installation program or installer is a computer program that installs files, such as applications, drivers, or other software, onto a computer. Some installers are specifically made to install the files they contain; other installers are general-purpose and work by reading the contents of the software package to be installed.
They exist both as "standalone installer" (or "offline installer") and "web installer" (or "online installer"), where the former allows for offline installation as it contains all installation files, whereas the latter needs to download files necessary for installation from the web at the time of installation.
The differences between a package management system and an installer are:

The installer is always compatible with its archive format, if it uses any. However, installers, like all computer programs, may be affected by software rot.
Bootstrapper[edit]
During an installation of a computer program, it is sometimes necessary to update the installer or package manager itself. To make this possible, a technique called bootstrapping is used. The common pattern for this is to use small executable files which update the installer and starts the real installation after the update. This small executable is called bootstrapper. Sometimes the bootstrapper installs other prerequisites for the software during the bootstrapping process too.
Common types[edit]
Main article: List of installation software
Cross-platform installer builders produce installers that run on Windows, macOS and Linux. An example is InstallAnywhere by Flexera Software.
Windows NT family includes an installation API and an associated service called Windows Installer. Microsoft provides a minimum level of tools required to create installers using Windows Installer in the freely available Windows SDK, instead focusing on the API to allow developers and third parties to leverage it in creating custom installers. Third party tools may supporting create installers using this API to speed the process. Examples include InstallShield (Flexera Software) and WiX (Outercurve Foundation). Installation authoring tools that do not rely on Windows Installer include Wise Installation Studio (Wise Solutions, Inc.), Installer VISE (MindVision Software), Visual Installer (SamLogic), NSIS, Clickteam, InnoSetup and InstallSimple.
macOS includes Installer, a native package manager. macOS also includes a separate software updating application, Software Update, that only supports Apple and system software. Included in the Dock as of 10.6.6, and also in the Apple menu, the Mac App Store shares many attributes with the successful App Store for iOS devices, such as a similar app approval process, the use of Apple ID for purchases, and automatic installation and updating. Although the App Store is Apple's preferred delivery method for macOS apps,[7] previously purchased licenses cannot be transferred to the Mac App Store for downloading or automatic updating. Instead of an installer, many macOS applications distributed outside the Mac App Store use an Apple Disk Image (.dmg file) that contains an application bundle to be dragged and dropped into the Applications folder; those applications are described as drag-install applications. These often feature prominent installation instructions and a shortcut to the Applications folder; that style of drag-install application was invented and published by Iris Artin (formerly Ben Artin) during the development of Fetch 5[8] and subsequently gained wide adoption. Commercial applications for macOS may also use a third-party installer, such as the Mac version of Installer VISE (MindVision Software) or InstallerMaker (StuffIt).
System installer[edit]
A system installer is the software that is used to set up and install an operating system onto a device.
Examples of Linux system installers:
Anaconda: used by CentOS, Fedora
Calamares: used by multiple Linux distributions (incl. some Ubuntu flavors, Debian, and derivates)
Debian-Installer ("D-I"): classic Debian installer (textual and graphical[9] interfaces)
Subiquity Ubuntu Server installer
Ubiquity: Ubuntu Desktop installer (until 22.10)
Ubuntu Desktop Installer: current Ubuntu Desktop installer (starting 23.04)
YaST for SUSE-based projects
Another example is found in the Haiku operating system, which uses a utility called Haiku Installer to install itself onto a device after booting from a live CD or live USB.

Windows 11 Windows 10 More...Less
Windows 11Windows 10
There are many reasons why you might receive an error message when upgrading or installing Windows 11, but common errors can be fixed with a few steps that you can do on your own. Note: An upgrade takes your device from an older version of Windows, such as Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Before searching for a specific error code, try the tips listed in General fixes. If those don't fix your upgrade or installation problem, check the table of error codes at the bottom of this article.
General fixes
Here are some things you can try to fix upgrade and installation errors:
Remove external hardware
Unplug any nonessential hardware devices. These could include headphones, printers, scanners speakers, USB flash drives, and external hard drives.
If you’re using a laptop and it’s plugged in to a docking station, undock it.
Update Windows
It’s a good idea to make sure that all important updates are installed before trying to upgrade Windows. This includes updates to hardware drivers on your device.
For information and to make sure you're up-to-date, see Windows Update: FAQ.
Uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus software
Use Windows Defender to protect your device during the upgrade—non-Microsoft antivirus software can sometimes cause upgrade problems. As long as you have installation media and all required activation information, you can always reinstall the software after you upgrade.
To remove an antivirus application, go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features. Select the program, and then select Uninstall. Select Yes to confirm.
Uninstall nonessential software
Outdated software can cause problems with a Windows upgrade, so removing old or nonessential applications can help.
If you plan to reinstall the application later, make sure you have the installation media and all required activation information before removing it.
To uninstall software, go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features. Select the program, and then select Uninstall. Select Yes to confirm.
Free up disk space
To upgrade to Windows 11, you need enough space on your hard drive for the installation to take place.
To view how much hard drive space is available on your computer, select File Explorer on the taskbar (known as Windows Explorer in Windows 7) or press Windows logo key + E.
Then select Computer or This PC and look under Hard Disk Drives or under Devices and drives. If there are multiple drives listed, the system drive is the drive that includes a Microsoft Windows logo above the drive icon. You’ll see the amount of available space under the drive.
If it looks like your drive is running low on space, see Tips to free up drive space on your PC.
0xC1900101 Errors
An error that begins with 0xC1900101 is usually a driver error. If you see any of these error codes, try the following steps first to fix the problem. If these steps don’t work, see Resolve Windows upgrade errors for more detailed technical info.

Windows Setup terminated unexpectedly due to another process running in the background.
When you start Windows by using a normal startup, several applications and services start automatically, and then run in the background. These programs include basic system processes, antivirus software, system utility applications, and other software that has been previously installed. These applications and services can cause interference when you attempt to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.
To help you determine whether a background program is interfering with the upgrade, a "clean boot" may be needed. See How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Windows Setup terminated unexpectedly due to another process running in the background.
When you start Windows by using a normal startup, several applications and services start automatically, and then run in the background. These programs include basic system processes, antivirus software, system utility applications, and other software that has been previously installed. These applications and services can cause interference when you attempt to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10.
To help you determine whether a background program is interfering with the upgrade, a "clean boot" may be needed. See How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Want to install a fresh version of Windows 10 on your PC? Connect a blank USB flash drive or insert a blank writable DVD. You can install Windows 10 by creating a bootable USB flash drive or DVD that contains the Windows 10 installation files. You'll need a USB flash drive that's at least 8GB, or any blank DVD to get started.[1]

If you already have Windows 10 installed on the PC and just want to reinstall it, it'll be easiest to reinstall it from within Windows 10 instead of creating installation media.
If you want to upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you won't need to create an installation disc or drive. However, you will need to follow most of this method to start the upgrade.

Make sure you have a product key. If you bought Windows 10 through Microsoft using your Microsoft account, your product key is already linked to your account. If you bought Windows 10 from another retailer, you'll have a 25-character product key that you'll need to have handy to activate Windows.[2]

If you need to install on a different PC, make sure you choose the language and edition for which you have a license, and select the architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) that matches the PC you're going to install on.
If you're not sure about the architecture, you can choose Both from the menu.

Flash drive: Select your flash drive from the list, click Next, and wait for the installation files to install. When the process is complete, click Finish.
DVD/ISO: Click Save to save the ISO file to your computer—it may take a while because the file is large and has to be downloaded. Once downloaded, you'll see a progress screen that monitors the download. When the download is complete, click Open DVD burner on the "Burn the ISO file to a DVD" screen, select your DVD burner, and then click Burn to create your DVD.

Boot the PC into the BIOS. If your PC is not already set up to boot from your flash or optical drive, rebooting from your installation media won't work. You'll need to make a quick change in your BIOS to change the boot order. There are a few ways to get in:[5]

Windows 8.1 or 10: From Windows, open Settings, select Update & Recovery or Update & Security, and go to Recovery > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.
Any PC: Reboot the PC and immediately start pressing (over and over again) the keyboard key required by your PC to enter "Setup," or the BIOS. The key varies by computer, but here are some of the most common keys:
Acer and Asus: F2 or Del
Dell: F2 or F12
HP: ESC or F10
Lenovo: F1, F2, or Fn + F2
Lenovo ThinkPads: Enter + F1.
MSI: DEL
Microsoft Surface Tablets: Press and hold the volume-up button.
Samsung and Toshiba: F2
Sony: F1, F2, or F3

Based on step 5 above, when it prompts "Which type of installation do you want?", you should select "Upgrade" to keep your files and settings. If you select "Custom", you will have a clean installation and all of the files and settings of your previous version of Windows will be cleaned.
